He said in a later meeting, it was “done by the other team.“
A rocket explosion in the parking lot of a hospital in Gaza City on Tuesday caused uproar after Hamas claimed it was the result of an air attack by Israel. Intelligence sources, including data from an infrared satellite, show the blast was caused by a rocket from Islamic Jihad that misfired.
Other videos purport to show that the rockets were being fired from a cemetery located close to the hospital. An intercepted communication from Hamas officials said the strike came from forces aligned with them.
The Palestinian Health Ministry, which is run by Hamas, reported that 471 were killed in the blast and another 300 were injured, stating more than half were children. Early reports from the IDF suggest that dozens may have been killed but they expressed doubt that the number is in the hundreds.
Following a briefing that provided this and more information, President Biden said, “Based on what I’ve seen, it appears as though it was done by the other team.” He did not offer details but reasserted his belief that the Israelis were not responsible for the blast.
President Biden reiterated his support. “I want you to know you’re not alone. We will continue to have Israel’s back as you work to defend your people. We’ll continue to work with you and partners across the region to prevent more tragedy to innocent civilians.”
A meeting that President Biden had scheduled with Arab leaders in Jordan was canceled after the explosion.
